It has always struck me as deeply hurtful when Christians prove too strict to be faithful, those who believe so ardently and stringently in one aspect of religion such as the Bible, and lose their faith in the process. Sometimes the ability to see with open minds proves harder to find than expected. Many times simplicity is the best solution.
Recently, a very active church I have attended was struck with a crisis. One of the pastors gave a sermon entitled: “Is The Bible True,” a very direct statement indeed. The truth behind the message was not to discredit the Bible at all, but rather point to different ways to interpret its valuable meanings and life lessons. The message focused on allowing people to step back from the complexity, specifics and details within the Biblical stories, and instead take a naive, child-like perspective to view ideas they may have been missing. Why not consider the possibility that some of the Bible’s teachings are simply metaphors, scribed by the priests to present a much greater, deeper truth? This question did not seem to go over well with many of the so called “Christians” at the church.
After many actually had the nerve to walk out during the service, others heckled and chastized the pastor on the church’s website as well as in person. I could not help but ask myself: would a true Christian turn his back to a different view? Would a true Christian directly attack a pastor on a personal level because of a message? Would a true Christian keep their mind shut and instead turn a blind eye and distant themselves? None of the “hurt” people of the incident did anything that was in my mind “Christian,” or even close to what Jesus himself would have done. People who had attended the church for years suddenly vanished, heart stricken by the message that they thought “dismissed” the Bible, or somehow made it seem less important. From my perspective, the exact opposite was true.
Religion is different for every being, every nation; every living breathing person on Earth. It is an expression of faith, hope and the ability to live life with virtue and spiritual satisfaction; sometimes it is easy to get caught up in one word. Just because Jonah wasn’t actually swallowed by a giant fish does not take away even the smallest ounce of power the Bible presents. Maybe Jesus was married and had kids, he was human to, that does not take away from the fact that he lived his life helping others, preached love, and exuded virtue. The key is to go beyond the literal translation and have a faith so strong, so pure and so real that it becomes you are able to go beyond a simple text and into a deeper, truer, prsitine meaning of understanding, with real life meaning.
Maybe Jonah did get swallowed by a giant fish, who knows, but it does not retract from an individual’s relationship with God, in any way shape or form. Seeing something from multiple perspectives can only enhance one’s understanding, not make it flounder. The meanings hidden behind the scripture’s teachings strike deeper into a person’s soul than anything else; and sometimes complexity can blind us from seeing them.
After the crisis had boiled down, attendence rates were obviously lower than expected. The pastor who gave the sermon took an extended leave of absence for a couple weeks before teaching again. I sent him a letter shortly after explaining exactly what I have said in this article. It sickens me to see people be so hurtful, so hypocritical and so narrow-minded as to turn on God and criticize because they refuse to see something in a different light. Faith is what you make it, and what matters most is not how you approach the details of religion, but what you get out of the simple truths it has to offer.
I used to worry about closed minded Christians, but they’re a dying breed, and will be gone soon.

I agree, if anything should be learned from God’s actions when he walked amongst us, he’d probably be one of the first ones to listen and hear what someone has got to say to him, even if it betrays his belief.
I guess devout Christians forget that fact, and go all defensive when they see a possible slamming of their faith.

There are no words to describe how fond i am of this essay. I have been criticezed and laughed at by my devout christians friends, who refuse to open their minds to new perspectives, for believing that the Bible is a metaphorical masterpiece. The lessons the Bible has to teach are beautiful whether literal or not. Jesus was a man of virute and love who found the God essence within him and sheared it with the world as God directed.
I just stumbled on this interesting post. I’m often intrigued by people who call certain Christians “closed minded” simply because those Christians choose not to agree with them. I don’t think that’s closed minded; I think it’s exercising your right to make up your own mind and have your own opinions.
Speaking of opinions, I may stir up the pot here a bit by expressing my opinion about those who believe the Bible is a metaphor: Their pride and ego will not allow them to believe in something they cannot understand. They consider themselves wise enough and intelligent enough to understand all truth in the universe. Therefore, when something comes along that they don’t understand, then it must not be truth. The alternative, to accept that here is a truth they actually don’t understand, is just not an option for them.
This is the pride problem that is at the root of all sin. People think they know better than God.
We all know there is a solid Truth in our world and there are many things to be interpreted and it is our adventure of life to try and distinguish which is which. I know what I believe to be Truth and that is held in the words of the bible; the only parables I see in the bible are the ones Jesus spoke of in his own teachings.
The biggest thing I get out of this essay is not that I need to change my views but that I can have a better understanding to how someone else may see it. I may see the bible as a word for word but telling someone who’s a non-Christian and believes the book to be full of metaphors otherwise….I won’t be received so gracefully if I pull out the “I’m right, you’re wrong” card. Whether the bible is all Truth, all metaphor or a mix of the two, the bottom line remains the same…God loves us. He is all powerful, all knowing, our creator, Father, friend. As long as we know that I think we’re in the right direction.
Your article touches on a point that has been on my heart for some time. I’ve seen the exact scenario you’ve described played out many times, and it always leaves me torn.
I’ve always tried to be a peacemaker. I’ve always tried to be open minded, reasonable, and compassionate. But lately I feel like I’m trapped in between the hard nosed close-minded believers, and the cynical and moral-less non-believers. I feel like I’m constantly trying to shine some light into the darkness, only to have it covered up by a self-righteous hypocrite who would rather tell someone off than try to see their perspective.

Adam / Eve for example
Adam/Eve represent male and female
which also represents duality
The serpent represents evil
the apple represents knowledge
Eve was punished for eating the apple from the tree of life/knowledge
by doing so she was basically admitting knowledge is limited which god did not want.
If you admit knowledge is limited you’re going against gods will for knowledge is limitless.

I will tell you that the BIBLE is not a metaphor. Christianity is different from other religions where you have to work to get to heaven. Christianity means relationship. A relationship between God and yourself as His son/daughter. No matter what you say or do to deny God, He will always love you. I as His son will love you though I don’t know you. God wants to reach out so that you can have a relationship with Him. Romans 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God.

Good article. While I do not believe the whole bible is metaphor, there is a whole lot of metaphor in it. I believe in God, the bible, Jesus and evolution! I suppose that while I believe God created the universe, I cannot take the biblical creation account in a hyper-wooden literal way.
But the hyper-literalists believe all of science is wrong. There “interpretation” of scripture doesn’t allow a literal interpretation of God’s book of nature!

Exacly what aI think about God. The bible is ancient peoples faith stories. God is still speaking today outside of the bible. What is our faith stry? How are we living out our faith as followers of Christ. Too many people put God in a box. I find God more in the questions than having all the answers.
Good subject. I have recently been urged, by circumstance ( I beleive by a higher power) to get myself a Bible. I got a nice copy of the ESV Old and New Testaments and started to read. I have alway beleived in a God of some sort and reading this blew me away. It is quite clear it is a mixture of historical fact and metaphor.
I questioned the Word when reading Genesis to find Adam and Eve were the first people brought to Earth days after its creation. So what of evolution? how could mankind be walking around before the dinosaurs? how could the descendants of Adam running to Noah be hundreds of years old? how could Noah be on the ark for 600 odd years?
These questions were bothering me when it struck, of course a good part of the Bible is metaphorical. It is a good way to get certain messages across,ie Love Patience, Discipline, Peace, Acceptance, Diversity, the list goes on.
I feel closer to the Lord already and Im only a few pages in, it clarifies everything and I am truly excited about what is to come.
The point of the book is to make life better and clearer and to bring us closer to understanding God and Goodness. Take it as you want and let others do the same, everyone will have different views, dont waste time arguing over it, as long as the book is doing the right thing, we are all on a journey and will take different routes to the same destination, dont miss the wood for the trees.
I have been studying the Bible through metaphors, parallels and symbolism (called in Hebrew, the “drash” code) for the last 14 years, and I have learned so much more than I would have if I had only done a surface, literal, study of half of the book. I believe the person who wrote this is correct my husband judged someone for saying the bible is full of metaphors and Jesus taught in parables he tuned out that this was what he the person speaking was being taught in a seminary and that he was trying to get my husband to in my opinion search his faith and do more scriptural research

I agree with you, after all someone had to interpret the bible first and teach their views on the way they perceived it. So why isn’t another perception allowed to offer their view?
The big problem with believing that the Bible is only a metaphor, is that you then have the ability to believe that Jesus Christ never really existed. Therefore you cannot truly believe that Jesus Christ really died on the cross for your sins. Therefore you cannot have salvation and the grace of God if you don’t believe in what Grace and salvation truly is. The Bible teaches that you have to have faith that Christ paid for your sins. If you don’t truly believe that happened, then you will have to stand before God the father and pay for your own sin debt. I understand the concept of Christian’s ruining the idea of Christianity. I believe Christians have done more harm to the kingdom of heaven than Satan ever has. They don’t make themselves the ambassadors of Christ like they are supposed to. Christ was the ambassador of God the father. He said if you have seen me, then you have seen the Father. Which means if you’ve seen me in my walk, and my talk and actions and love characteristics, then you have seen the father because he is exactly the same. And we Christians are supposed to be the exact same way. We are supposed to exude the characteristics of God through a holy walk in this life. Therefore being a light to the other nations. Just like the children of Israel were supposed to do.
But if you don’t believe real blood was spilt for your sins, then you are considered “lost”….
